basemap

A basemap is a basic set of map data that is built into a GPS receiver.

Receivers with a basemap can usually show major roads or landmarks that are nearby (even if a detail map for the area hasn't been loaded into memory).

The specific information included in a basemap varies, but you'll usually find highways, larger roads, cities and towns.

Some GPS receivers do not include a basemap.
