datum

In a very simplistic sense, you can imagine a datum as a grid system wrapped around Earth so that a location can be expressed as a set of numbers (e.g., latitude, longitude, elevation).

You might be surprised to learn that latitude and longitude measurements for a particular location will vary depending on which datum is used as the reference. This is because the points of origin and the model used for Earth's shape can vary from one datum to another.
