A detail map is a set of map data that can be loaded into a GPS receiver.
As the wording implies, detail maps usually include a lot of information about a particular area. It's common to find roads of all sizes, lakes, rivers, parks, and even the location of individual street addresses. Some detail maps provide topographical data that shows contour of the surrounding land.
Detail maps usually need to be loaded into a GPS receiver using a personal computer, but some models come pre-loaded with detail maps.
The area of map coverage is often limited by the amount of memory available in the GPS receiver. Some handheld models may only have enough memory to store part of a state or large metro area. Some vehicle navigation systems come with pre-installed detail maps covering all of the United States and Canada.
