Many GPS receivers have a built-in points of interest (POI) database, which is used to show the location of nearby landmarks.
The location of items in a POI database is represented as a single point (similar to a waypoint). Therefore, POI databases do not include roads, rivers, and other multi-dimensional features found in basemaps and detail maps.
The specific information included in a POI database varies from model to model. Simple databases identify the location of cities and towns. More extensive databases also include the location of just about every street address along with names of businesses and government offices.
Its fairly common for basic handheld models to use a POI database instead of map data. In more capable models, POI data is included along with map data.
